Healing Economy Guide
How healing works in Tears of Metal at Early Access launch: Statue node outputs (~20-23 per clear vs 50+ upgrade costs), altar pricing, roast meat HP, healing nodes, and what Paper Cult is changing in upcoming patches.
How Healing Works at Launch
Healing is intentionally scarce in Tears of Metal so that mitigation, positioning, and battalion orders matter more than potion chugging. Game8's early-access review mapped the entire launch economy clearly: Healing Nodes require you to clear three or four enemy hordes before the heart icon actually heals, altars sell healing for a steep price, Merchant stalls stock consumables at gold rates, and roast meats scattered on the battlefield restore only five to eight HP each. None of those sources keep pace with hero damage taken during Act 2 elites — so launch-week players rely almost entirely on defense, dodge, and battalion crowd control rather than topping off a green bar.
Statues drive the meta-progression layer. Each Statue node completed in a run grants twenty to twenty-three Statues toward Village upgrades, but most early-army upgrades already cost fifty or more. That gap means a single mid-run wipe can halt your Village progress because you spent gold and time without banking enough Statue currency. Paper Cult acknowledged in their launch-week Steam community post that healing scarcity went too far and committed to expanding healing options in upcoming patches while keeping permadeath and tactical positioning central to the design.
Patch 0.8.57278 shipped "More Statue Region rewards, and increased quantity" plus improved healing reliability when procs occasionally failed — those changes remain active in current build 0.10.57598. Treat the numbers below as the launch baseline with Statue outputs trending upward — re-check Latest Patch Notes after each push. Pair this page with Survival Without Healing and Village Upgrades.
Healing Sources by Type
Statues are the slowest healer to bank but the most reliable. Launch builds awarded roughly twenty to twenty-three Statues per node while army upgrades cost fifty-plus; 0.8.57278 increases Statue Region frequency and quantity, so expect fewer runs per upgrade tier. Treat Statue nodes as mission-critical waypoints — skip them only when a Threat spike makes the surrounding route lethal.
Healing Nodes (heart icon) require you to clear several enemies before the prompt becomes interactive. Game8 documented that you "would first need to mow down at least three or four hordes of enemies" before the heal triggers — counterintuitive when you are at low HP, so most players treat these as HP budgets for the next combat rather than emergency buttons.
Altars buy healing directly but cost substantially more gold than rerolls or charms. Reserve altar purchases for boss attempts where one more mistake ends the run; in trash combats, a Charm or focus purchase beats spending gold on a small heal.
Roast meats littered on battlefields restore only five to eight HP each at launch. They feel thematic but rarely swing a fight; grab them only when you are walking past rather than detouring.
- Statues — 20-23 per node, 50+ per upgrade (bank for Village)
- Heart Nodes — clear 3-4 hordes first to activate the heal
- Altars — steep gold cost; save for boss attempts
- Merchant stalls — gold-priced consumables, often overpriced
- Roast meats — 5-8 HP pickup, mostly flavor

What Changed Since Launch — and What Is Still Coming
Statue Region rewards improved in 0.8.57278 and remain in 0.10.57598. Patch 0.9 added health bar fixes and save recovery for corrupted meta saves — not mid-run campaign checkpoints. Paper Cult still lists broader meta-progression rework and mid-campaign saves as active priorities, so altar pricing, Heart-node activation, and roast-meat values may shift again.
Avoid planning around speculative numbers — re-read Latest Patch Notes after each push. Distant Cloaks now reduces Threat by 2, which indirectly preserves healing by lowering hazard pressure; see Map Events.
Playbook on Current Patch 0.10.57598
Run Wallace solo or Ruadh Stonecrusher (unlock via Banshee) in co-op to anchor mitigation. Prefer Emblem families that reduce incoming damage (Stirling, Iona) on Act 1 routes. Detour for Statue nodes even at modest Threat cost — the Village progress loop is healthier post-0.8 but still rewarding.
When you reach a Heart node at low HP, kite surrounding enemies toward the node so the clears the game demands also slow approaching adds. Do not chase roast meats across the map; the time lost usually costs more HP than the five-point pickup restores.
For launch-week habits see Beginner Tips. Confirm client version 0.10.57598 before co-op so health bar and healing reliability fixes apply to the whole lobby.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Statues do I need per upgrade?
Launch stats show army upgrades costing 50+ Statues while Statue nodes award 20-23. Plan around two Statue clears per upgrade until Paper Cult balances the economy.
Do Heart Nodes heal immediately?
No. You must clear 3-4 enemy hordes first. Approach them as low-HP planning nodes, not panic buttons.
Will altar prices change in early patches?
Paper Cult committed to expanding healing options because launch prices felt too punishing. Treat altar costs as likely to drop; check Latest Patch Notes for confirmed numbers.
Are roast meats worth picking up?
Only when you walk past them. They restore 5-8 HP and do not justify detours. Use them as flavor pickups rather than healing economy anchors.
