Early Access Roadmap & Updates

Planned Tears of Metal Early Access updates: new heroes, Acts, co-op balance, console port timing, and how Paper Cult handles the 4–12 month EA window.

Early Access Now Live — 100K Sales, Patch 0.11 Balance

Tears of Metal entered PC Early Access on July 22, 2026 and continues receiving numbered patches through launch month and August. The current live build is hotfix 0.11.57874.1 (August 9, 2026), preceded by gameplay patch 0.11.57863, hotfix 0.10.57598 (July 31), feature patch 0.9.57408 (July 28), and launch-week balance patch 0.8.57278. Full changelog breakdown lives on Latest Patch Notes.

Paper Cult confirmed the game surpassed 100,000 Steam copies sold shortly after launch and restated two top engineering priorities: mid-campaign (mid-run) saves and multiplayer desync when hosts are far away or unstable. Neither has a public ship date yet — see Mid-Campaign Saves Explained.

Patch 0.11 rebalanced Charm rarity tiers, softened the Act 2 difficulty curve, adjusted Act 2 captain health and block health, changed emblem family offer weighting toward unseen clans, and reworked Iseult the Banshee's stun bar — see Beat the Banshee. Hotfix 0.11.57874.1 targets mouse stutter from the Epic Online Services overlay without additional balance changes.

Crossplay between Steam and Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass remains temporarily disabled on the default branch as of 0.11.57874.1. Mixed-store squads should follow the Crossplay Guide beta branch or wait for Paper Cult to re-enable default-branch parties. Always compare Settings → About before co-op lobbies.

Early Access Window — 4 to 12 Months

Paper Cult estimates Tears of Metal will remain in Early Access for four to twelve months depending on player feedback, content throughput, and online co-op stability goals. Early Access is not a static demo—it is the primary development phase where Acts, heroes, Emblems, Charms, elites, and village systems expand while the core musou roguelike loop stays playable throughout.

Steam store messaging promises price increases after Early Access exits, which implies a meaningful content delta between July 22, 2026 launch and 1.0. Players joining at launch help shape balance through reviews and forums; players joining later benefit from more content but pay the higher post-EA price if Paper Cult follows through on stated pricing plans.

This roadmap summarizes publicly stated plans and reasonable wiki tracking categories. Exact dates shift—treat months as order-of-operations guidance, not contractual guarantees.

Emblem & Charm Rework (Pre-Launch)

Paper Cult documented major progression changes between the retired demo and Early Access launch. The demo exposed four incomplete Emblem families with tier 1 and partial tier 2 coverage; Early Access ships eight base families (Caithness, Orbs, Smite, Mark, Dunbar, Ross, Stirling, Iona) with tiers 1–3 plus cross-family synergy emblems. Orbs received explicit rebalance attention after dominating demo DPS charts.

Charms shifted from objective-grant rewards to a purchase economy at Village vendors — budget Charms alongside equipment, not as free mission bonuses. Ally Emblems now persist on companion soldiers until that ally dies, making Dunbar battalion buffs and Iona sustain picks valuable across multiple nodes within one campaign. Full clan breakdowns live on the Emblem Families page.

  • Eight Emblem families at EA launch (four new vs demo)
  • Charms purchased at Village shops, not granted by objectives
  • Ally Emblems persist until companion death
  • Orbs and overtuned picks rebalanced for launch

Launch Patch Track (July 2026)

Patch 0.8.57278 delivered the first numbered Steam news push: Statue Region healing quantity up, Ruadh unlock retargeted to the Banshee, Wallace Flamberge and Celtic Longsword cost cuts, parryable boss block-breaks, Distant Cloaks Threat relief, Cutthroat's Blade Charm, Gilles aggro and Dreadshot combat fixes, plus a long list of achievement and UI bugs. Default-branch Crossplay is temporarily off — use the Steam "Crossplay" beta if you need Game Pass parties.

Still in progress after that patch: host-distance desync, mid-campaign saves, and broader difficulty / meta-progression rework. Demo removal on July 6, 2026 means no parallel demo branch; EA IS the live branch. Always compare Settings → About before inviting friends. Full changelog: Latest Patch Notes.

Placeholder text and art called out in Steam Early Access FAQ should diminish across the first major content milestone rather than hotfix-only weeks. Watch Upcoming Heroes for Brienne quest fixes and the two teaser commanders Paper Cult confirmed are coming after stability work.

Content Roadmap Themes

Launch EA includes three Acts, three heroes, Emblem families, Charms, equipment, companions, village settlement upgrades, daily challenges, and four-player online co-op. Roadmap expansion themes Paper Cult and press materials emphasize include additional heroes beyond Wallace, Ruadh Stonecrusher, and the third launch roster member; new Emblem synergies and Charm interactions; extra elites and bosses deepening Mother Dragon Stone lore; village buildings affecting future campaign map options; and continued co-op scaling improvements.

Act 4 or equivalent endgame extensions, if planned, likely arrive mid-to-late EA rather than launch month—indie roguelikes often ship narrative finales closer to 1.0. Watch Steam news and official social channels for milestone trailers.

  • Phase 1 — Stability, co-op netcode, balance hotfixes (launch month)
  • Phase 2 — Hero expansions and Emblem family additions
  • Phase 3 — Act extensions, elite variety, village depth
  • Phase 4 — 1.0 polish, price adjustment, console launch alignment

Xbox Console & Cross-Platform

An Xbox Series X|S release is planned before end of 2026, after PC Early Access proves content pacing. Console updates may batch differently due to certification, so PC players sometimes receive balance patches days earlier—common for cross-platform indies.

PC Game Pass integration at EA launch keeps the player pool large while console waits. Steam ↔ Microsoft Store crossplay shipped at launch (and received an early hotfix), but patch 0.8.57278 temporarily disables default-branch Crossplay — see Crossplay Guide. Console co-op is still planned for late 2026.

Community Feedback Loop

Paper Cult entered Early Access explicitly to exchange with players after a year of playtests that produced overwhelmingly positive demo reviews. Feedback channels include Steam discussions, official Discord, Steam forums, and an in-game feedback tool. Paper Cult also collects opt-in anonymous gameplay-only telemetry to balance Emblems and co-op scaling. Constructive reports with reproduction steps—co-op desync after Gilles phase two, Emblem tooltip errors, controller glyph mismatches—accelerate fixes faster than vague negativity.

Roadmap priority is not strictly democratic; narrative and hero production schedules matter. Still, balance outliers noticed when Game Pass floods Act 1 with new players typically receive hotfixes within days if reproducible. Feature requests for map voting, cross-store parties, or split-screen belong in forums but may land mid-EA rather than launch month depending on engineering cost.

This wiki summarizes outcomes, not internal sprint plans. When patches change Emblem values or village costs, companion guides update alongside this roadmap page so returning players see both what shipped and what remains planned.

Version Tracking on This Wiki

Each major patch entry on this page will note version numbers when Paper Cult publishes them, highlight co-op stability changes, and link to affected guides—controls if rebind defaults shift, map if node icons change, co-op if scaling adjusts. Minor hotfix text without gameplay impact may roll into cumulative notes to avoid spam.

Compare your client build in Settings → About against listed versions if online co-op fails; mismatched versions between squad members cause hard lobby blocks more often than server outages during Early Access. After the demo ended July 6, only the EA branch receives updates.
