Tears of Metal Builds

Central hub for Tears of Metal buildcraft: emblem families, synergies, Charms, and equipment. Learn how 100+ artifacts combine into Act-clearing Early Access builds.

How Builds Work in Tears of Metal

Tears of Metal is a roguelike where power spikes come from stacking Emblems, Charms, equipment, and battalion investments within a single campaign, then carrying permanent unlocks back to the village between runs. A "build" is not a static talent tree—it is the emergent combination of clan perks, artifact procs, and hero kit interactions that peaks during Act 2 elites or Act 3 Mother Dragon Stone assaults. Early Access launches with eight emblem families (four appeared in demo builds), dozens of Charms, and over one hundred artifacts according to Paper Cult marketing.

Successful builds commit to synergies rather than collecting random upgrades. Emblem tiers run from 1 to 3 within each family, plus cross-clan synergy emblems that appear when you own multiple families. Charms rewrite rules—disabling healing, doubling emblem picks, or buffing soldiers—while equipment provides stat foundations. Understanding layering order prevents dead runs where emblem spreads lack proc density.

Build Layers Explained

Emblems — Per-run upgrades tied to Scottish clans. Tier up by picking repeated family offers at battle rewards. Ally emblems persist on companion soldiers until they die. Demo builds included four incomplete families; Early Access doubles the roster to eight with rebalance passes on Orbs and other overtuned picks.

Charms — Purchased modifiers at village shops or challenge rewards (Paper Cult shifted Charms from pure objective grants to a purchase economy in post-demo patches). Charms stack rules and tradeoffs—more emblem choices versus less healing, for example.

Equipment — Permanent weapons, trinkets, and artifacts unlocked via village shops, shrines, and campaign objectives. Hero-specific weapon lines matter; Wallace swords differ from Ruadh hammers.

Battalion & companions — Soldiers level between campaigns; companions add auras and ally emblem slots. Builds fail when DPS outpaces soldier survival—read battalion management alongside pure damage stacking.

Build Timing by Act

Act 1 rewards committing to one or two emblem families by mid-chapter. Spread too wide and Gilles the Hog becomes a gear check. Aim for tier 2 in your primary clan before the boss. Act 2 elites punish single-damage-type builds—add a secondary family with cross-synergy emblems or swap Charms at village shops between attempts.

Act 3 hazard zones and Mother Dragon Stone guardians require defensive Charms or Ruadh healing support unless your burst windows one-phase elites. Equipment upgrades from settlement upgrades matter more in Act 3 than emblem tier 1 picks from Act 1. Use Act 3 walkthrough to identify damage check encounters before respecing village investments.

Hero-Specific Build Notes

Wallace scales with Caithness chains and Orbs mobility. Ruadh prefers Smite radial and Mark detonation on slow hammer chains. The third hero will likely favor families Wallace and Ruadh underuse—reserve flexible emblem plans until you confirm their kit. Hero choice does not lock emblem offers, but proc rates align better when emblems match attack speed and hit counts.
