Tears of Metal Combo Strings
Master crowd control combo strings in Tears of Metal Early Access: Light/Heavy chains, formation breaks, co-op spacing, and emblem picks that amplify musou combat.
Why Combo Strings Matter
Tears of Metal looks like a button-mashing musou game until a shield wall pins you against environmental hazards and your battalion collapses. Paper Cult built readable attack chains where light and heavy inputs combine into crowd control, guard breaks, and launch juggles — the same skill ceiling Dynasty Warriors fans expect, wrapped inside roguelike Acts where healing is scarce and one bad positioning mistake ends runs.
Combo strings are not cosmetic flair. They control space, build special meters that trigger battalion commands and hero ultimates, and stack XP multipliers documented in our Fast XP & Leveling guide. Early Access players who learn two or three reliable chains before Act 2 elites report smoother clears than players who spam random heavies. Watch the gameplay trailer above for the density and rhythm Paper Cult targets, then drill the chains below in Act 1 before Gilles the Hog.
Core Crowd Control Combos
These four strings cover most launch-week encounters. Input notation uses L for light attack and H for heavy attack in order pressed. Exact animations vary slightly per hero — Wallace sword swings cover wider arcs than Ruadh Stonecrusher hammer swings, but knockback timing stays similar enough to transfer muscle memory.
- L, L, H, H — Safety Clear — Wide knockback and area clearing when surrounded. Default panic button; use when Threat spikes or archer lanes collapse on your position.
- L, H, H, L — Guard Break — Breaks shielded elites and mixed groups with launch setup. Pair with battalion focus fire on the staggered target. Wallace Block Thrust (block + light, light) is the dedicated armor pierce — see Armored Enemies.
- H, L, L, H — Formation Breach — Forward breach plus lateral push through enemy lines. Opens paths for soldiers to advance on choke-point nodes.
- H, H, L, H — Aerial Cyclone — Air juggle into ground slam for dense packs or elite priority. Highest skill ceiling; whiff punish is severe without dodge ready.

Spacing and Dodge Windows
Musou crowds punish greedy finishers. Start L, L, H, H only when a dodge escape path exists — the final heavy leaves Wallace and Ruadh briefly committed. Act 2 elites with grab attacks will catch you mid-animation if you chain in place. Circle strafe during light attacks to stack Mark or Caithness procs, then commit heavies when the pack faces away from hazard zones.
Blocking and dodging sit outside combo notation but gate every string. Wallace players can block into L, H, H, L for safer elite openings; Ruadh trades block range for hyper armor on select hammer heavies. Read Survival Without Healing for when to abort a combo and recall battalion instead of chasing one more hit.
Combo Roles in Four-Player Co-op
Co-op squads benefit when one player runs L, L, H, H clears while another focuses L, H, H, L guard breaks on captains. Vanguard Tracker players — once unlocked — can hit-and-run with shorter chains while Ruadh anchors center. Do not four-stack identical strings on the same elite; stagger roles so knockback and launch setups do not cancel ally finishers.
Voice callouts beat visual clutter: announce "breach" before H, L, L, H so teammates stop dodging into your lane. Ping elites before L, H, H, L so battalion focus aligns. Full squad tactics live in Co-op Multiplayer and the Co-op overview.
Emblems That Amplify Combos
Caithness chain lightning rewards wide light-attack sweeps — ideal for L, L, H, H safety clears. Smite radial bursts trigger on heavy finishers, synergizing with H, H, L, H slam windows. Mark stacks from light chains set up detonation when H, L, L, H breach lines spread debuffed enemies. Orbs collectors benefit from dodge-can cancel strings between L inputs.
Plan families in the Emblem Planner before runs; do not force emblem picks that conflict with your practiced combo route. Cross-reference Best Emblem Synergies for Act-specific pairings once Act 1 strings feel automatic.
